In Irish history and folklore, the rowan tree (chaorthann) was a potent symbol of protection against evil, believed to ward off witches and fairies. One of the seven sacred trees of the Celts, the rowan was frequently planted near homes, hung from rafters, or woven into protective charms to safeguard people, livestock, and property.

Its connection to ancient beliefs is also shown by an Irish medieval poem referring to it as 'the tree of the druids', and legend claims the mythical Tuatha Dé Danann brought the first rowan berries to Ireland from Tir na nog
